Custom Design - The Commissioning Process
The majority of Don Stuart’s work is custom designed and commissioned.
Commissioning is a very exciting process where the client interacts
with Don in order to have a unique piece designed and created exclusively
for them. It could be for a special piece of jewellery such
as a wedding ring, something for a particular event or anniversary,
a presentation gift or a large architectural installation. In his
studio, Don does all the work himself from drawing the initial sketches
right through to the making and finishing of the piece.
After the client contacts Don, they will arrange a meeting or, for international and non-local clients where distance may make a personal meeting difficult, the creative process takes place through detailed emails and phone conversations. Initially, the client and Don will discuss what item is desired and what parameters there may be including style and budget. He often will sketch during this conversation in order to establish the likes and dislikes of the client and to help both visualize the direction. Don’s influence and excitement usually will come from the client but then, drawing upon his expertise and creativity, he will introduce new concepts and originality for the client to consider. The exhilaration of creating something special and unique has begun!
